Titanium Grade 4 (CP Titanium)

Commercially pure Titanium Grade 4 for IGEA dental implants · Highest mechanical strength among CP titanium grades

ASTM F67
ISO 5832-2
MDR 2017/745

WHAT IT IS

Titanium Grade 4 is commercially pure titanium (CP – Commercially Pure) of the highest grade among the four ASTM F67 / ISO 5832-2 classes. Compared to Grades 1-3, it has the highest interstitial oxygen content, which confers maximum mechanical strength at the expense of reduced ductility.

Mesa Italia uses Titanium Grade 4 for the production of IGEA System dental implants (Narrow, Regular, Short lines), with SLA surface (Sand-blasted, Large-grit, Acid-etched) to optimise osseointegration.

It is the reference material for primary endo-osseous components: it combines excellent biocompatibility, osseointegration, mechanical strength adequate for masticatory loads and a modulus of elasticity lower than steel (reduction of stress shielding).

STANDARDS AND CERTIFICATIONS

ASTM F67

ISO 13485

Mesa Italia manufactures according to ISO 13485 quality system (medical devices). Compliance documentation available for customer audit.

HANDLING AND SAFETY

Handling: CP titanium is a reactive metal with high oxygen affinity. At room temperature it is passivated by a protective oxide layer (TiO₂) that guarantees biocompatibility and corrosion resistance.

Processing: use dedicated tools (never used for other metals, to avoid contamination with iron or copper that cause galvanic corrosion). Milling with adequate cooling, low cutting speeds, abundant lubrication.

SLA surface: sandblasting + acid etching treatment that creates microroughness favourable to osseointegration. Do not rework the implant surface after treatment.

Safety: titanium powders are pyrotechnic – risk of fire/explosion. Avoid accumulation of fine powders, use ATEX extraction, separate ignition sources. Store in a controlled environment.

Safety data sheet (MSDS): available for powders/chips. The finished implant is a solid article not classified as a hazardous substance.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why is Titanium Grade 4 used for dental implants?
Grade 4 is the CP titanium with the highest mechanical strength (tensile strength > 550 MPa, yield strength > 483 MPa) among the four ASTM F67 classes, maintaining excellent biocompatibility and osseointegration. It is the optimal compromise for endo-osseous components subjected to masticatory loads.
What is the difference between Titanium Grade 4 and Grade 5?
Grade 4 is commercially pure titanium (CP), Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) is an alloy with aluminium and vanadium. Grade 5 has superior mechanical strength but lower theoretical biocompatibility due to vanadium corrosion products. For primary endo-osseous components, Grade 4 is preferred; for high-load prosthetic components, Grade 5/23 is used.
Is Titanium Grade 4 biocompatible?
Yes, it is one of the most biocompatible materials overall. Spontaneous passivation with TiO₂ makes it inert in biological fluids, with excellent osseointegration (direct bone-implant contact). Compliant with ASTM F67 and ISO 5832-2. Biocompatibility documentation available for audit.
What is osseointegration and why is titanium ideal?
Osseointegration is the direct structural and functional bond between vital bone and the implant surface. Titanium favours this process thanks to biocompatibility, TiO₂ passivation and the possibility of surface treatments (SLA) that create optimal microroughness for osteoblast adhesion.
What are the mechanical strengths of IGEA Grade 4?
Tensile strength > 550 MPa, yield strength (Rp0,2) > 483 MPa, elongation at fracture > 15%. Composition: N<0,05, C<0,08, H<0,012, Fe<0,25, O<0,13, Ti remainder. Data compliant with ASTM F67 / ISO 5832-2 Grade 4.
